The Williamsburg Cougars

Who knew that my main man Rob would be the main focus of this blog.  I mean, I realize that he is dedicated to make this thing a success by taking one for the team last week in the below freezing temperatures, but for two weeks in a row he has come up big in providing me with excellent material to expand on.

This Saturday was a perfect Saturday for jogging, at least for the winter season.  The weather was great, and our presence happened to be graced by three great up and coming elementary education majors (Naomi, Kim, and Rachel) and a mile jogging machine (Nick).  We decided to take a tour of Dogstreet, the heart and soul of Colonial Williamsburg.  Finally, after five years of being a resident I was taking a tour of the beginnings of our great country.  Yea, that's pretty sad, but I never expected that there was so much action going down in the historic town, and boy do I mean historic.

Let me just get to the juice of the matter.  Last week, Rob's shoes, the Nike Trainer 1.2 Mid Hyperfuse, caught the eye of a young lady who unfortunately was too shy to attempt to meet the guy with the fire shoes.  This week, however, there was no shyness at all.  It all began with a tough decision to split our group up.  With the guys attempting to jog at a much faster pace than the ladies, an attempt that didn't last too long at all.  Last week, our decisions didn't place us perfectly to meet young ladies, but boy did this choice ever help us meet someone.  As the guys stopped to take a break the ladies caught up to us and informed us that some ladies thought we were cute.  And as this break ended up being for quite a minute, as we pondered on our next route, those ladies happened to catch up.

This is when it gets good!! They didn't think WE were cute.  They were only bedazzled by Rob and his bumbling yellow shoes.  The funny thing is, these weren't the kind of ladies you would hope to find pursuing yourself as a young college student taking a jog.  Let's just say they were...a little older.  Anyway, one lady in particular, with her orange walking stick and HD sunglasses, seemed to like young Robbie a little too much.  She said he looked like a nice bumble bee in his yellow sneaks and continued to inquire about other issues of colorful shoes.   Her and her friend left us after a couple minutes and we had our chance to giggle.  Fortunately we were able to meet up again, and Rob's friend assumed that he was chasing her.  I guess she was just trying to relive her glory days before the orange walking stick and HD glasses.  I'm sure she was a fine young lady.

On a much more serious note, we all met up at Aroma's once again for a snack and a chance to get to know each other a little more.  And once again I left disappointed, this time with a parfait, which I should have known I wouldn't enjoy.  In the meantime, we learned that nowadays people still have friendships that are unconditional.  It is nice to know that there is still enough hospitality to go around in the world to promise a couch and some comfort to a friend no matter what stage of life they're in.  Some friends are willing to follow a dream to California, even though the next turn may be unexpected.  Maybe not the best idea, but...

In conclusion, I want to give a shout out to one of my favorite people in the William and Mary elementary cohort, Kim Lincoln.  Who knew that someone I shared the smallest freshman dorm on campus with and never even talked to once would be one of my best friends now.  It is amazing the people that you pass up on meeting for whatever the reason during your lifetime.  Not because you choose to, but due to circumstances and scheduling.  I didn't even know I had met Kim before we started the program.  Now I'm sitting enjoying breakfast with her trying to convince her not to go teach in Maryland, just because I don't want to go back to that wretched state .  Anyway, take a chance and open up to someone who you wouldn't expect to be a great friend. You never know what may happen.  And it's easier to get out of something bad than it is something good.

Frozen Hands, Fire Shoes, and Trash Hot Chocolate

Of course the first day of the jogging season would be on the coldest day that I have touched the outdoors all year.  It may have been a little warmer if I was running with a couple more bright faces, but instead it was just me and my boy Rob jogging to save our own lives from the freezing cold.

We took a tour outside the walls of The College's campus starting at confusion corner.  The jog began with a debate on whether to tour the campus in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction.  We chose clockwise, much to our dismay as a nice pretty thing went by us in the opposite direction halfway through.  It was all good though.  Going in this direction allowed for perfectly placed pit stops for my boy Rob, who was enjoying a two egg breakfast along with a nice dose of cleansing vitamins.  But this combination was a stop for the best.

Our first stop was the beautiful Miller Hall.  Here, I met a nice guy, 22 year vet. of the United States Army, just like my own father, who was nice enough to open up about his own life to me.  He spoke to me about his son who turned down athletic scholarships to pursue a career in the medical field.  You see, that's what this thing is all about.  He explained to me that his son loved the study that he was getting into and it was his passion to follow this dream.  Some may say that his son is crazy to turn down scholarships.  But I say, what's worse that a life full of emotional debt taxed with an interest rate of regret.  This was an inspiring bathroom break.

We got back on the path as soon as my hands chose to defrost, somehow it always works that way.  After a couple more stops and a pick up of pace as soon as some girls jog by we finished.  Hands frozen and numb.  Luckily Aroma's was right around the corner and things were looking up.  That is until the Hot Chocolate was served.  Who wants unsweetened Hot Chocolate, really though.  I was thoroughly disappointed.  However, it led to small talk and time to share elementary school experiences of learning our taste buds by tasting bitter chocolate.  Hence, my distaste for a life similar to a box of chocolates.

After Aroma's our journey led to the Tennis center.  But before we made our way to the car Rob's flashy shoes caught the eyes of a dapper young lady.  Unfortunately it was just the shoes...

First Things First

SO....you're probably wondering what this is all about. You should be, one because, well, this IS the first post, but more importantly because this is kind of random.  Well, the whole reason I choose to begin this blog was out of inspiration I had one late night when counting sheep just couldn't get the job done.  I had this idea during winter break to start a jogging club that meets every Saturday morning, goes for a fun run, and then goes out to grab a bite and reverse the effects of good exercise.  The late night inspiration came in the idea of blogging about the experiences and relationships developed during these mornings.

You see, I'm finding myself seeking to develop deeper relationships with friends and associates.  Not to lay claim to a title of popularity, but rather to learn more about the world around me and the people who cross my path.  So much of the world nowadays is nothing but business.  Money has become the gear that turns the world 'round.  People are becoming robots with a directive only to seek out their best way to supply themselves wealth and supply another product in the capitalist market. Many times a day we walk by each other without even the slightest glance to show that we are each human.

I just want to affect a little change upon the world.  That's all.  So I'm hoping that I can get to know some people who are completely different than me through a common exercise.  It so happens that this exercise is exercise.  So stay tuned, and join in...
